The Bible Project defines covenant as "an English translation of a Hebrew (berit) and Greek (diatheke) word that describes a formal relationship between two parties who agree to a set of promises so they can work together toward a common goal."
God initiated covenants with His people numerous times throughout Scripture, all with the ultimate goal of restoring His creation back to His original purpose.
We see one of those instances in Genesis 28, where God is speaking to Jacob, Abraham's grandson:
"Look, I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go..." (Genesis 28:15a, HCSB).
God continues to remind His people that He will be with them.
Deuteronomy 31:8 says, "The Lord is the One who will go before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged" (HCSB).
Joshua 1:5b says, "I will be with you, just as I was with Moses. I will not leave you or forsake you" (HCSB).
Psalm 94:14: "The Lord will not forsake His people or abandon His heritage" (HCSB).
Simply put, God clearly desires to be with His people. So relax--you can breathe now! God wants to be with you!
Listen, I have fought so hard to win my battles alone, and it has NEVER worked. But when I let Jesus in, everything changes. He actually fights for me!
Friends, I want to make one thing very clear in this blog. If you walk away with anything, let it be this right here: Our confidence, if not found wholly in God, is worthless.
That brings me to the lyric I want to focus on.
We're standing on His promise that He will never leave us
We're standing on His promise. The promise He has made His people since His people became a people: He will NEVER leave us.
If you have a minute, open another tab, go to Bible Gateway, and search for some keywords like "leave," "forsake," "remain," and/or "covenant." I think you might be amazed at how many times God reminds His people that He will not leave them.
"Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won't collapse because it is built on bedrock" (Matthew 7:24-25, NLT).
We must build our foundation, our core, on Jesus. Only then can we stand firm in the face of adversity. When trials come, be it earthly tragedies or spiritual warfare, we must stand firm upon the Rock of our salvation.
My song, "Nothin's Gonna Stop Us," runs deep, with much to dig into. I could sit here and type a million different thoughts about each lyric. Instead, I want to encourage you to listen to the song and process what you believe God is saying to you and what you are saying to Him.
One thing is for sure. God is for us, not against us, and He will NEVER leave us. Therefore, we can be confident. We can step out in faith and do all that God has called us to do!
